When i started paneling this object that was given to us, i was very confused about the Polysurfaces, and how the react to tools like paneling tools. We had to convert to to a simple surface rather than one that is broken up by multiple panels.
So i used the method discussed in class by contouring lines and networking them as a surface. The end result is what you see below...

ARC 402 - "UnDesk" Project
I know this is ARC 499, but we are learning Rhino and I just wanted to post some progress with studio. I mainly created this using the sweep command between two rails and the offset surface command once i got the desired surface. The one issue I have been having is creating a "fillet" smooth edge.Rendered in Vray with a simple glossy plastic material.

lattice archipelogics

Since last class i was combing through images of lattices used in architecture and it has been quite an eye-opener; there are an infinite amount of applications with lattices out there . I found many different styles including this organic shape. I think though whenever you multiply the same pattern hundreds of times something unique comes up. This is what happened when i found a picture from an architecture exhibit dubbed "archipelogics."
The Lattice Archipelogics project is a collaboration between SERVO architects and Smart Studio. It was initially produced for the Zaha Hadid curated Latent Utopias show. It then went on to show at the Centre Pompidou and the SF MoMA, where it now has been aquired into the permanent collection.
This is where i think that we have not begun to scratch the surface of interactive architecture- especially interactive surfaces. Imagine if these units spanned across a building reacting differently to varying circumstances. Things would be amazing. Once interactive architecture gets over this "Gimmicky" phase, I think it will be widely used to express artistic trends and fantasies never imagined.

In Class Using Blend Commands
In class trying to follow Axel's quick mini tutorial on blending commands which will prove to be indispensable in the coming future. Truly amazing how well this simple command works to blend shapes together.As far as the paneling tools went, I went as far as creating the panels out of this crazy surface, but when i tried to array them between to surfaces, i just failed. I forgot how to use it.
I will be looking up the tutorial to continue with paneling tools, im certain that by using this program and plugin we can create amazing objects and shaped from irregular bases and surfaces

More Shots of exe.001

In my previous image I had the array of units and it was a little tough to see whee the connections stood. I made a rendering of the single unit. you can see the connecting items a little better than before.
The Red Material, was a cut out out of a three foot sphere, so it has a minimal amount of concavity. I wanted the Red Material to be like a mesh. For some reason I though about a shield. Maybe its due from playing Medieval II Total War (awesome game by the way).
Below is the screen shot of my rhino file. It will get you a better understanding of how the connections work. What I like mainly about the piece is the that the pieces create new shapes
within the voids. Both of them, when connected, create circular voids. It goes back to the creation of the skin, i used a circle to subtract volume from the core. I even used a sphere for the green parts.

While i know the emphasis of the project was to focus on the connections on our pattern-like skin; i think that form was a great place to start. Since the beginning i wanted to use a series of two systems that would weave in between the other. I know i didn't get the desired effect, but with two separate 'systems' in place I achieved some of my early goals.
Both of these objects were created from the same 3" circle and sphere. I used a subtractive method in both AutoCAD and Rhino to to achieve the desired aesthetics. I think this helps to bring the two shapes together, they both have the same Boolean parent.
I think the best way I can illustrate connections is through technical documentation i.e. AutoCAD. I think i might hope in there to illustrate just how this system connects.
